West Row Academy

PE & Sport Premium Funding

Intent

At West Row, our intent for Physical Education (PE) is to provide all pupils with a high-quality curriculum that enables them to develop competence, confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. We aim to inspire children to engage in a broad range of physical activities, fostering physical, social, and emotional well-being. Through PE, we promote the core values of teamwork, perseverance, fairness, and respect. We believe that physical education is vital in developing fundamental movement skills and encouraging a love for active lifestyles, ensuring pupils understand the importance of health, fitness, and well-being.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is delivered through engaging and structured lessons that build progressively on skills from Early Years through to Year 6. Lessons are inclusive and tailored to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring that every child can participate and succeed. The curriculum includes:

  • Key Stage 1: Pupils focus on developing fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balance, agility, and coordination. They engage in a variety of activities that encourage teamwork and cooperation, including basic team games and simple dance movements.
  • Key Stage 2: Pupils build on their foundational skills by applying them in a wider range of sports and activities. They participate in competitive games, develop techniques in athletics and gymnastics, perform dance routines, and engage in outdoor and adventurous challenges. They also learn the importance of evaluating their own performance to enhance their skills.
  • Swimming and Water Safety: As part of the curriculum, all pupils receive swimming instruction to ensure they can swim at least 25 metres and demonstrate proficiency in different strokes and self-rescue techniques.
  • Extra-Curricular Opportunities: We offer a variety of clubs, competitions, and inter-school sporting events to extend pupils’ experiences beyond the classroom and encourage active participation in sport.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in the confidence, skill progression, and enthusiasm that pupils demonstrate in physical activities. Through PE, pupils develop resilience, cooperation, and leadership skills that transfer into other areas of learning and daily life. By the end of Year 6, our pupils:

  • Show competence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Engage in physical activity regularly and understand its benefits for long-term health and well-being.
  • Participate in competitive sports with confidence and a positive attitude.
  • Display improved teamwork, problem-solving, and social skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on their performance and strive for personal improvement.

Through our carefully planned and well-delivered PE curriculum, we aim to equip pupils with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to lead active, healthy lives beyond their primary school years.

The Government provides funding for primary schools to spend on additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport they offer.
