Art and Design

Intent:
The intent of the CUSP Art curriculum is to provide our children with a structured, progressive journey in developing their artistic skills and competencies. Vertical progression is carefully embedded in the curriculum, ensuring that children revisit key artistic disciplines at increasing levels of challenge and complexity throughout their primary education. The curriculum aims to nurture children’s development as artists, focusing on a wide range of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D art, and collage. In addition to core knowledge and technical skills, the curriculum also emphasises the development of artistic thinking and communication. Through a focus on oracy and vocabulary, children will learn to use the language of art meaningfully when discussing their own work and the work of others. The goal is for our children to become confident and reflective artists who can communicate their artistic intentions and evaluate their work effectively.

Implementation:
The CUSP Art curriculum is implemented through a series of modules, each dedicated to a specific artistic discipline such as drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D art, and collage. These modules are carefully structured to build upon prior learning and increase in complexity, allowing children to revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts. Each module focuses on different aspects of artistic development, including technical skills, creativity, and self-expression. Activities within each module are designed not only to enhance practical skills but also to foster oracy and vocabulary development, enabling our children to articulate their artistic processes and ideas confidently.

Impact:
The impact of the CUSP Art curriculum is seen in the progression of children’s artistic skills and their ability to express themselves creatively and reflectively. Over time, children become more proficient in a wide range of artistic disciplines, gaining confidence in their abilities and deepening their understanding of artistic techniques and concepts. The focus on oracy and vocabulary ensures that our children are able to talk meaningfully about art, both in terms of their own work and the work of others. By the end of their primary education, our children are equipped with a strong foundation in the key disciplines of art, and they demonstrate a clear understanding of the processes involved in creating and evaluating art.
